About Me

A communicator, educator, and creative strategist

I am a communication educator, creative strategist, and branding professional passionate about helping students become thoughtful communicators and creative problem-solvers.

My professional background blends education, communication, branding, digital strategy, and user-centered design. After more than a decade working in education, leadership, curriculum development, and digital communication, I developed a passion for creating meaningful learning experiences that connect theory with professional practice.

My background includes serving as a STEM lead, training 40+ teachers, developing curriculum and a school STEM website, teaching robotics, engineering, science, and critical thinking, and creating a LEGO Education Robotics after-school club. These experiences shape how I approach instructional design: with clear structure, hands-on application, and opportunities for learners to create and solve problems.

Today, I continue expanding my expertise in branding, web design, UX, digital storytelling, accessibility, and communication strategy while helping students develop the skills needed for today's creative industries.

“I believe education should connect the classroom to the world — turning theory into craft, and craft into confidence.”

Jared Rosaline Hernandez

My Philosophy

What I Believe

Five convictions that shape every course I design and every class I teach.

Student-Centered Learning

Learning starts with the learner. I design experiences around students' goals, voices, and lived experience — not a one-size-fits-all script.

Authentic Assessment

Students are assessed the way professionals are — through portfolios, critique, and real deliverables — not memorization.

Creativity

Creativity is a teachable, assessable skill. Structure and constraint sharpen it; freedom without scaffolding buries it.

Collaboration

Communication is a team sport. Students learn to give, receive, and build on feedback the way creative teams actually work.

Continuous Growth

Reflection closes the loop. Without it, experience is anecdote; with it, experience becomes expertise — for students and educators alike.

Teaching Impact

What defines my teaching

Student-Centered Learning

I believe students learn best when they actively participate in the learning process rather than passively consume information. My courses emphasize collaboration, discussion, creativity, and authentic application.

Authentic Assessment

I design assignments that mirror professional practice. Rather than relying solely on exams, students demonstrate learning through branding projects, presentations, audience research, portfolios, and real-world communication challenges.

Inclusive Learning

Drawing from my experience teaching diverse middle school classrooms—including students with ADHD, IEPs, ELL learners, and varying learning styles—I intentionally design learning environments that are accessible, engaging, and supportive of every student.

Lifelong Growth

Teaching is an evolving practice. I continually refine my courses through reflection, student feedback, instructional research, Quality Matters principles, and emerging educational technology.

"Education is most meaningful when students leave more confident than when they arrived."

Objectives, activities, and assessments map directly onto one another so no learning is left to chance.

Assessment Philosophy

Why authentic assessment over memorization

Memorization measures memory. It tells us what a student held onto long enough to repeat — not what they can do. Authentic assessment measures the discipline itself: can a student design a campaign, tell a brand's story, defend a strategy?

That is the only assessment worth giving in a communication classroom.

The Growth Cycle

Learning

Concepts introduced in context, not isolation.

1

Practice

Students apply concepts to real communication tasks.

2

Feedback

Specific, criterion-based feedback — not just grades.

3

Revision

Iteration is expected; growth is the grade.

4

Growth

Final evidence demonstrates transferable mastery.
